Orthotics are customised insoles to suit the specific patient’s foot. Use of these as part of a treatment plan is referred to as orthotic therapy.
At Total Foot & Posture, we can custom make and tailor our orthotics to suit your foot and its diagnosed condition.
Human feet were designed to walk on natural and soft surfaces, like sand and grass, which accommodates to the shape the foot. However, as time and technology progressed, humans began to walk on hard surfaces (concrete). When the ground is too hard and does not provide any 'give’, the foot compensates by collapsing the medial 'inner' side, flattening the arch in an attempt to gain ground contact which is known medically as 'Pronation'. This pronation ultimately leads to foot and lower limb problems from overuse and excess strain.
These problems can be easily corrected by our Podiatrist through orthotic therapy.
The aim of an orthotic device is to place the foot in its optimal 'neutral' position whilst weightbearing therefore reducing the stress and strain caused by structural problems on the feet and lower legs. It is basically a mechanical device that changes the ground to suit the individual's foot.
Orthotics are prescribed by podiatrists to treat a range of conditions and anomalies such as flatfeet, heel pain, ankle pain, knee pain, back pain, chronic sports injuries and malalignment disorders.
